Venne prodotto da Apple come personal computer dal 1980 al 1984 come successore ad Apple II e doveva diventare il computer che avrebbe colmato le lacune che avevano i precedenti, rispetto ad Apple II questo nuovo computer aveva un nuovo sistema operativo più evoluto "Apple SOS", un monitor proprio, niente più ventole al fine di limitare i rumori, un nuovo cabinet fatto in alluminio e un'unità a dischi 3 per la precisione, in più era dotato di un orologio in tempo reale con anche la funzione calendario che per allora era una novità, che però non grazie al suo malfunzionamento costrinse Apple a disattivarla. Viene ricordato per essere stato il primo fallimento commerciale di Apple e anche come uno dei peggiori computer mai costruiti, infatti aveva il box troppo piccolo rispetto all'hardware interno e aveva c'era anche la problematica del surriscaldamento, inoltre il prezzo di vendita era troppo alto (8.000 dollari), come risultato si ebbe un computer che aveva un costo eccessivo e che si surriscaldava.
Questo nuovo computer fu progettato sotto la guida di Wendell Sander , il progetto all'inizio aveva un nome in codice "Sara" (come la figlia di Sander).
Le strutture in alluminio (materiale che era utile per dissipare il calore e per schermire le emissioni radio) vennero fatte costruire da una fonderia che si occupava di produrre motori per autoveicoli.
